My Top 3 Products To Easily Transition Your Home From Infant To Toddler Proof

It happens so quickly.

One second your baby is a squishy little newborn who can barely open his eyes, and then right before your eyes he discovers his hands, his feet, how to roll over. Yay! You marvel at the little accomplishments and can’t wait to see him crawl.

Then one day he pulls up on the coffee table and you jump up to get your camera. You come back to find your hot coffee spilled all over the rug and the mug broken on the floor. It takes a second to process who did this…but when you realize it was your baby, your whole world starts to change.

This child can now get into everything. *cue the screeching horror movie music*

Your child’s safety is your number one priority, and then next is your sanity. Making your home toddler proof can be daunting. Where do you start?

Well, I am no expert, but I definitely have experience in this area. I am on my second toddler and my baby is now almost 5 months old, so I’m about to have a third baby on the move.

So here are my top three products to help make the transition as easy as possible! This list is not exhaustive by any means, but I tried to keep it simple so as not to overwhelm anyone. (ha)

1. Baby Gate

We live in a split level home, so we have stairs going up to our bedrooms, and a set going downstairs to the basement and laundry room. It did not take me long to learn that babies LOVE to go up and down the stairs…even when they take multiple tumbles down them.

We have two of these gates and the easy open handles save my sanity. We go through them a bazillion times a day, so it’s nice to have something easy to get through. They also come with an attachment that you can add on if your walkway is wider than the gate.

They are easy to install too. You just turn the knob one way to extend and the other to retract it. You have the option to screw it into the wall or just use the pressure of the gate to hold it in place. We chose not to screw them in and they work great. The ends have a rubber protective bumper.

2. Outlet Covers

This one may seem obvious, but it’s very important so I put it here on the list.

These are not the ones we purchased, but I honestly think these would work better. The ones we got had a little flap in the middle to make it easier to remove the cover when you needed to use the outlet, but Rhett had broken pretty much every tab on them. So that’s lame. (ha)

3. Cabinet Safety Lock

I keep cleaning supplies and dish washing detergent underneath my kitchen cabinet, so it is very important to keep that cabinet locked.

I’ve heard a lot of friends say they move that stuff to an upper cabinet, so you could always do that, but I like keeping the stuff for the dishwasher next to it.

We bought this safety lock and it has worked great! Rhett has yet to figure out how to open it, which is a miracle. It’s his goal in life to figure out everything, so I’m impressed this has kept him at bay.

Bonus:

Both of my boys, but especially Eli, love to open the refrigerator. Which is SUPER FUN. (ha) So this lock keeps the lil stinkers out and the cold air in. I couldn’t find the exact one we bought, but this one was the most similar one.
